the Sun as Uncle Sam Happy 4th of July!

Independence Day is more than a chance for family and friends throughout this country to gather for barbecues and fireworks displays, it is an annual celebration to commemorate the courage and faith of our founding fathers in their pursuit of liberty.

People everywhere are fascinated by fireworks - by the mystery and splendor that light the night sky or turn a backyard into a festival of light and sound. Like nothing else, fireworks can excite, thrill and amaze us. But as dazzling as fireworks can be, they can also be harmful if used improperly

If you choose to use consumer fireworks to celebrate this year's Fourth of July festivities, remember the following safety tips from the National Council on Fireworks Safety:

  1. A responsible adult should supervise all fireworks activities.
  2. Never give fireworks to young children.
  3. Always purchase fireworks from reliable sources.
  4. Follow label directions carefully.
  5. Never point or throw fireworks at another person.
  6. Use fireworks outdoors in a clear area away from buildings and vehicles.
  7. Never carry fireworks in your pocket or shoot them in metal or glass containers.
  8. Light them one at a time then move back quickly.
  9. Do not experiment with homemade fireworks.
  10. Observe local laws and use common sense.
  11. Sparklers, fountains and other items that many states allow for use by consumers are appropriate when a large crowd is present.
  12. If attending a community display, leave your own fireworks at home - there will be plenty of excitement provided by the display.
