What do we do?
The Family Support Specialists provide in-home support to families in Durham County. Our services are free, available in English and Spanish, and work with the parent and child together for 12-20 weeks to build on family strengths and increase positive interactions. The Family Support Program also helps families connect to community resources. Families are referred by community providers (such as the health department, schools, and health providers), or seek services for themselves. If someone is required by the court or Child Protective Services to complete a parenting program, the Family Support Program can meet this obligation.
The Child and Family Team/Team Decision Making Facilitator facilitates meetings with Department of Social Services social workers, families, and their support system to develop plans for placement and visitation that protect children while preserving and reunifying families, minimizing traumatic separation.
We also provide workshops to parents and professionals on various topics, including: positive discipline, language development, acculturation, self esteem, strengths based work with special populations, and engaging families
How do I get help from the Family Support Program for myself or someone I know?
Agencies or individuals can call 919-403-8249 x231 to make a referral. If you are currently required by the court system or the Department of Social Services to complete a parenting program, you can ask your social worker to refer you to our program.
How much does the program cost?
The program is free to Durham County families. We are supported by Durham County Department of Social Services, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, the Exchange Clubs' Foundation, and local Exchange Clubs so that families have as few barriers as possible to getting support. We are able to provide age appropriate toys for families who participate in our program that need them due to the generosity of Triangle United Way and Crocodile Creek.
